Wedding flat lay photographs are such a great way to capture all of your personal details and items in a way that is both beautiful and creative. You get to include so many details that may be small in size but hold a huge meaning--all in one photograph.
Every single flat lay that I get to style is different from the last--see a full wedding gallery here--which is one of the reasons I love doing them. For most weddings, I set aside at least 30 minutes at the start of your day to take your details and arrange them in a way that perfectly represents your wedding. This time is a huge part of my intentional wedding photography approach, ensuring that every detail is captured and its story told exactly how it should be.
And if you want to earn brownie points with your photographer, take the time to organize your wedding detail items in a nice box or bag. That way, everything is in one place, ready to go when they arrive with camera in hand; and you aren't stressing about where you've misplaced your invitation suite or your perfume bottle when you should be getting your makeup touched up or enjoying a glass of champagne with your bridesmaids before the wedding day events start to take place.
It's easy to rush through preparing your items, but the more intentional you are about selecting what to include, the more meaningful and unique your flay lay will be, and the more you will LOVE your final images. That's why I've created a list of items that you won't want to forget when it comes time to gather your flat lay items for your photographer.
Don't skip this one! It's a common one to forget. But wedding invitation suites make the perfect focal point, and they really take your flat lay from lacking to complete. Be sure to include everything from envelopes to wax seals!
Some brides opt for comfy flats or even cute bridal sneakers for their reception, but I highly recommend going all out for some bridal high heels. Not only do they photograph BEAUTIFULLY in a flat lay, but you'll be so glad you wore them in your portraits, too!
I recommend keeping the rings together in a ring box with the rest of your detail items, that way everything is in one place together. After I'm done taking the detail photos, then you can give them to the best man, maid of honor, or whoever will be keeping them during the ceremony.
I love working with veils. Something about them just screams "bridal." Whether it's the lace or just a simple veil, I want to use it for your images!
Keep your bouquet in its vase with water until I arrive to be sure it stays fresh and hydrated for photos.
This typically includes bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and heirloom pieces. I definitely recommend keeping all of your pieces in small jewelry boxes, that way there is no chance of misplacing anything.
As a photographer, it's my job to really elevate your wedding detail photos to WOW you. I have a few tricks up my sleeve to make sure that your final images are absolutely jaw-dropping, but there are a few things you can do to help. Here are some wedding flay lat tips:
Most of these items are bride-focused but that doesn't mean that your groom can't have his own flat lay as well! Not all grooms have a lot of personal detail items, but if yours does, here is what I would include:
From years of experience as a Nashville wedding photographer, I've found that the most meaningful flat lays are the ones that reflect the couple and their story.
I'm a photographer who values the little details. I don't just rush past them--I take the time to arrange and photograph them with intentionality and purpose. The details you spent hours planning and gathering deserve quality time and attention, to make sure they are shown off beautifully.
Of course, these lists are not comprehensive. This is just what I've put together from years of experience in weddings! Any little details that are unique to your wedding deserve to be shown off, so don't be afraid to include anything and everything!
